Hello,

I'm Ronan Furuta, a freelancer born and raised in Oakland, California. I specialize in UI design, creating easy-to-use software, filmmaking, and photography. Inspired by my favorite movies, I strive to create strong stories and themes throughout my projects. When I'm not in the studio, I enjoy sharing my love of nature by facilitating meaningful experiences for young children at Trackers Earth.

Narrative music video
What happens to you when you learn your partner will need a heart and lung transplant to survive? Box of Matches approached me with their single Two Kinds of Sadness which was to be released as a part of a larger EP. They wanted to create a narrative music video to help promote the release of their EP. The song Two Kinds of Sadness is about the band leader's experience waiting for their partner to get a heart and lung transplant. The music video tells the story of how he learned his partner would need the transplant, and the feeling of dread that infused his life in the months waiting for the call.

Nicole Phungrasamee Fein's art is meticulously detailed. Every line and stroke is carefully thought out. I worked with her to create an online showcase of her work, giving the experience of being in a exhibition of her work online. Thin lines and strong grids make up her site, while copious white space reflects her artworks' personality.

With only a plot of trash to start, two farmers create the only healthy food option in a neighborhood.
With only a plot of trash to start, two farmers create the only healthy food option in a neighborhood. This short documentary explores the stories of two founders of the Florence Fang Community Farm in the Bayview district in San Francisco. Established in 2014, the farm is the only healthy food option in the neighborhood. Over the course of half a year, I created a short documentary about how this unique farm was founded and its impact in the community.

short documentary
The Network is a short documentary about the secret mycorrhizal network beneath our feet. I wanted to create a style that was thoughtful and reflected the forest's natural beauty. To achieve this, over three months, I created animations that felt natural and tactile while also shooting complementing scenic shots of forests.

black and white cinematography practice short
Inspired by Richard Brooks 1967 film "In Cold Blood," Trespasser is a short black and white cinematography film I directed and shot to practice lighting for darkness. My goal was to make the film look like it was only light by streetlights, moonlight, and a flashlight. I paid special attention to contrast ratios and making sure enough detail was in the camera negative to avoid any un intentional loss of detail in the shadows. Additionally, I created a custom credits sequence inspired by Saul Bass.

Weekly fun trivia website
Every week at the South Burlington Foodshelf, the director, Pedro, comes in with a new set of remarkably clever hand written trivia. Each week he gleefully reads them aloud to the volunteers and grins when they are stumped. I built this website to serve as an archive of his work and to allow more people to enjoy it. The site is built with Sveltekit and is updated regularly.
